I thought it wasn't half-bad

The DJ'ing went well. The kids binged while we cranked out the tunes. Took them a while to get into the swing of things but they did eventually and then it was closing time. Oh well.

In recent times I've found it difficult to get out of bed in the mornings. This means I spend an hour or more half-asleep listening to my clock-radio alarm. I wake half-knowing the news of the day and having subconsciously imbibed some radio-friendly tunes. One of these recently was Rupert Holmes - Escape, commonly referred to as "The Piña Colada Song". I'd always thought that song was by Barry Manilow and was in the same vein as "Copacabana". I thought the song was interesting with a repetitive driving bass line and fun lyrics.

Then, on Saturday, the day after the 21st, we were in a pub owned by, once owned by or with some connection the the band Snow Patrol, some or all of whom are from Thomastown where we were. The beer garden was full of lads from the night before getting their "cure". The bar maid was trying to make Piña Coladas but the milk was curdling and she was giving the failed results to the guys outside who were downing it in pints. It was then I realised I had to do a version of "Escape".

So, on the bus home to Longford yesterday, Sunday, I worked for a couple of hours on a reworking on the song. I've done a few of these recently and it's not really fair to call them remixes as they are but rearrangements or reworkings. This is the quickest one I've done. I did a few more hours tidying up and mastering when I got home and here it is: Cliph - Does Rupert Know.

So hold tight, hold tight

The Clap haven't been gigging in a while, we've done some recording and are now occupied by some other extraclappular musical endeavors, namely remixes. Karl produced a remix album of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" in 24 hours

Both of us are now working on a joint project of remixes and are making good progress. Some of the work I think is the best I've ever done. Hyperbole or not. More details about that anon.

As for personal musical projects I'm still knocking out beats and melodies but nothing really complete-track-worthy. I'm getting much more enjoyment from the remixing There's a tremendous sense of "standing on the shoulders" of giants, as the tracks we're doing as so good but also amount to what is an as-yet untapped resource.

Both of us are DJing at a 21st in Kilkenny the weekend after next. Don't scoff. It might be fun.

The children of tomorrow dream away

Spent most of this weekend past in, what was once and what will probably be referred to, until further notice, the Clap house. Reworking old tunes, working on new tunes and bits. We have a gig this coming Thursday in The Hub with a band from France called Room 204.
Because of the work we've put in and how the new and older, reworked material is sounding, I'm quite excited about it.

Live: For One Night Only

... until the next night anyway. Will be playing a gig with The Clap on this coming Tuesday, July 19th, in Whelans! We're quite excited about playing in Whelans. We'll be on stage at 8pm which is kinda naff but also good because it means people can get home to their beds earlier. Door tax is a little steep at €10 but I'm afraid that's outside of our control. To compensate our legion of fans we've made a CD, a public beta of our upcoming EP, that we'll be giving, for free, to everyone who attends.

See you there!

It’s like a dream to me

The Clap have another gig this Saturday. Karl and I have worked on, what I think is, a great electronic set - no guitars this time.
One Day is Left

Only One Day is Left, Only One Day.

Tomorrow I play my second gig with The Clap at the Ballroom of Romance in the Lower Deck.

We've been practicing long and hard. Long and Hard. None of the <del>old</del> ancient, set remains and only 3 of the songs we played last time will be heard tomorrow night, everything else is new and there's more new stuff to come.

I'm quite excited. We're on first so don't be late or you'll miss us. We have another gig in July, more details about that closer to the date.

For whom the chip beeps

Got Nanoloop a few months ago, it is without a doubt the best software out there for gameboy musicians. I haven't devoted the time I should to get the best results out of it. Just playing around with the synths, filters and sequencers I can see how much powerful fun I'm holding in my hands.

When I confirmed that Nanoloop would work on the Nintendo DS, I traded in my GBA SP and upgraded to a DS. The most interesting title I've got for that is called "Electroplankton" from Japan. It's a really intuitive piece of software for making sounds and atmospheres, it's not a game as there are no goals as such, just to create abstract sounds and beats.

I've had a lot of success with Reason 3.0 recently. The new mastering equipment is great. Produced a remix of a (maybe) well-known 80's track that I was getting increasingly pleased with and a few other snips of possible tracks. An "oops" meant I lost them all, add to that the other recent major data-loss I'm still in the middle of dealing with means I'm not a happy puppy.

By the way, this blog has an RSS feed and a LiveJournal syndicated account.
